A native of Florence, South Carolina, Kate Baltzell earned a B.A. in Biological Sciences and minored in Secondary Education at Clemson University. During her time at the University she worked as a Student Researcher of Rocky Mountain Field Ecology at Yellowstone National Park. Upon graduation in 2005, she accepted a Plant Science internship with Walt Disney World’s Land Pavilion at Epcot Center maintaining hydroponic display greenhouses. After spending valuable time working in the retail sector of the plant world, Kate became employed by Riverbanks Zoo and Garden in Columbia, South Carolina. As a Zoo Horticulturist for two years, her interactions with fellow employees and visitors of Riverbanks empowered Kate to seek further education in public horticulture.
In her thesis research, Kate is investigating the role of horticulture at zoos. Through an analysis of zoo horticulture she will develop guidelines for zoos wishing to enhance the promotion of horticulture to zoo visitors and employees of all departments. Kate is particularly interested in the tactics that public horticulture institutions use to engage visitors and surrounding communities.
